Colourblind

To tide everyone over until I have another long cartoon - Here is a story about my dad, who is colourblind, who once bought a "cream" suit.

Usually I try to post on the blog every day - unfortunately my gran, who has alzheimers, had a nasty fall yesterday and went in for a hip replacement surgery last night. It's been really hard for the family - hence the lack of blogpost regularity.
that's all :)

Yay for being home, surrounded by family and lime green suits :)

7 things

  1. Seeing your first good friend have a baby is a wonderful (and surreal) thing :) - (Congrats to Russ and Meg!)
  2. Jamming to Grease Lightning with your mom in a Barn is a great way to celebrate her birthday.
  3. Family is always the best thing.
  4. Sometimes you do things in life that surprise yourself. You've just gotta be a little brave.
  5. Drunk-dialing is usually not that fun for the person on the receiving end.
  6. Lying in bed, in your pyjamas, nursing a hangover, slotting down left-over party food, watching people run the Comrades Marathon, WILL make you feel like a lame-ass. Well done to all the people who ran it :)
  7. Some people look really funny when they run. haha.

Today

Tomorrow is the mom's big birthday - so I spent the day birthday shopping with the dad and getting some last minute supplies for the party on Saturday. On the plus side (not that shopping on the dad's card needs a plus side) - I did get to have a delicious Juicy Lucy date with my dad :) Yum.

Mad Monday

Photobucket

So I missed the usual "7 things Sunday" post yesterday because I was making my way back from an awesome weekend in Cape Town. (Full post and pictures to follow...)
But here is a wrap of the 7 things I learnt this week and weekend:

  1. If you walk through a pigeon-and-squirrel-infested park carrying a bag of peanuts, you will be attacked.
  2. A good coffee solves everything. (yeah, THIS PLACE.)
  3. Seeing old friends is always great
  4. Making new friends is always great
  5. Any place is more awesome with good company and someone who knows the city
  6. A break from the internet and cell phones and etc is refreshing (but also frustrating when people are trying to get hold of you)
  7. Cape Town is full of crafty and creative and fancy and wonderful things to do, places to see and foods to eat. Go there.
PS. pic of Lion's Head - taken whilst coming down from Table Mountain in the Cable Car.

Trash cards

Laura celebrated her birthday back in the states, so i sent her a card with her gift, made - for the large majority - out of trash. When you can send a friend a card made from "collected" ephemera that's when you know the friendship will stand the test of time.
Here's a sneak peak:

In the trash-card there were different pockets, some the perfect polaroid holding size, collected tags, magazine papers, note-spaces to write little messages, memories or quotes, tape, doilies, old maps, gift-bags and stamps. The whole thing was bound with purple embroidery yarn in a "grungy-trash-card" (read: I can't sew very well) way.

Laura is very dear to me so I used all my best trash. I hope the Lovely Laura had a fabulous birthday!

Ps. I am in the process of making a few of these "trash-cards" which I will be putting up in my Etsy store. Will keep you posted :)

Books

Being home for a short while - means that I can dive into my little book collections that I've missed whilst being away in South Korea. Here are some of my favourites:
Photobucket
Photobucket
The M.I.L.K photography range is a collection of photographs which aims to collate "images portraying humanity’s "Moments of Intimacy, Laughter and Kinship" (M.I.L.K.). The photographs are collected from over 17 000 professional photographers in 164 different countries.

The other series are two of the POST SECRET collections. Post Secret is an online project started by Frank Warren. People from around the world send in their secrets on a postcard to the Post Secret address and every Sunday a variety of new secrets are uploaded onto the Post Secret blog. One of my secret-postcards have made it onto the blog :)

in Flight.

On Sunday I left SoKo for the LONG trip back to South Africa :)

The trip in total:
  1. Taxi to Kintex airport shuttle. 20 minutes.
  2. Kintex airport shuttle to Airport. 45 minutes.
  3. Flight from South Korea to Hong Kong. 3 hours.
  4. Flight from Hong Kong to Johannesburg. 13 hours. 50 minutes.
  5. Flight from Johannesburg to Pietermaritzburg. 1 hour. 10 minutes.
BASIC SUMMARY: a crap-ass-long-time-of-travel.

On the flight from Hong Kong to Johannesburg i also managed to hook up the really great seat. You know, the one right at the back - that doesn't recline, right next to the toilets? That one. WIN.

Now...

I would like to share, so that if you are ever planning on flying from Hong Kong to Johannesburg - or any other crap-ass-long-time-of-flying - you may employ these fancy techniques:

Photobucket
Photobucket
Do not share the internet with the jealous people.
You created the internet.
it is YOURS.
You ONLY are entitled to the www.
Do not let the people steal your wifi's.
Remain alert.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Use the notebook.
Record it vigorously.
Be vigilant.
Shield your documentation from strangers.
Compile the seat profiles as follows:

Watch curious passenger's reaction to this.
Document it.
Document it a lot.
Shield your documentations from the passenger.
Continue with your running tally.

This game will be fun.
 I promise.
Photobucket
Trust me.
I tried.
for 14 hours, I tried.

Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
Encourage fellow passengers to do the same.
(For increased fun -) do not inform the flight attendants of this game.

The end.

It is GREAT being home! This morning I had cereal-mash-up with my dad for breakfast while we read the paper. Then i listened to my brother walking around the house making up his own tunes. This evening I'm going for a run with my mom. :)
Africa. i love you!
